The Differences Between Vertical and Horizontal Market Lists

Do you focus on one industry or multiple for selling your product? Both strategies are great – but when it comes to custom list building you’ll be looking at two very different business contact lists.

What does a vertical list look like?

A vertical list, on the other hand, focuses on one industry(typically divided out by SIC code) but multiple levels of businesses or contacts within that industry.

In this case, your list would potentially have multiple contacts at one business. In this scenario, building up relationships will be very important.

What does a horizontal list look like?

A horizontal marketing strategy is one that singles out a target audience across many industries. So, for a custom built list you will be looking at one type of contact (the IT Manager, for example) across many different industries and companies.

Here, the important demographic features are the job and size of the company (either in revenue or in number of people) when you are building the list. You will likely be looking at one specific type of job across similarly sized firms.

Additional Thoughts.

There is not a “right or wrong” list to build. What it comes down to is knowing who you are talking with in order to create a relevant conversation. Jargon, pain points, and standards will all be different depending on which route you choose to go.
